FAQ and Ordering

Is the jewellery solid silver/gold and is it hallmarked?
Other than where 22ct gold plating is indicated, all materials are solid gold or silver. They are hallmarked at the Birmingham Assay Office.
How do I keep my jewellery clean?
As there are a number of different finishes available, please ask Kate for specific advice regarding the piece you have bought.
What is etching?
Etching is a tecnique used to create a relief in the metal. By ‘stopping out’ and then drawing the desired pattern into the surface, the metal is then exposed to an acid solution, this ‘eats’ away, creating the pattern.
What is the black colouring on a lot of the jewellery?
It is often refered to as oxidisation, and is created using a chemical that is applied to the surface. The resulting black colour is the end of a process called pattination.
Are the diamonds used conflict free?
Yes - they are sourced from suppliers who guarentee to sell only conflict free stones.
Can I visit your studio to see the work?
Appointments can be made to visit studio - please email or telephone Kate to arrange. Standard hours are Mon - Fri 9am - 5pm.
If I am buying a present, and it doesn’t fit or they don’t like it (very unlikely!), can I return it?
Where a suitable alternative cannot be found, a refund will be given. Items may be returned for a full refund within 14 days of purchase, unworn and as new. Pieces made specifically to commission cannot be returned due to their individual nature. Kate Smith Jewellery Design sells vouchers, which you may like to consider.
How long will my order take?
As pieces are hand made to order, please allow 3-4 weeks, although please notify Kate of any special requirements, and she will do her best to accommodate.
How is my jewellery delivered?
All pieces are sent by Royal Mail, either using special or recorded delivery. Postage is calculated accordingly on orders under £100. P+P on orders over £100 is free (within the UK)
